Double Win at RIBA London Awards

Two beautiful brick-built homes, featuring high quality brick supplied by European Building Materials, have won prizes in the prestigious RIBA London Awards 2017.

The 2017 London Small Project Award went to  31/44 Architects for No 49, a self-build detached house created on an urban infill site at Hither Green, Lewisham.

Described as outstanding by the judges, with interior and exterior space merging seamlessly, No 49 was designed by Stephen Davies, one of the partners at 31/44 Architects, for his own use.

Organised around 3 courtyards on a staggered, rectilinear footprint, the attractive grey facing brick was sourced by EBM from Belgium to complement the weathered London stocks of surrounding Victorian terraces.

Alongside this, architects Carmody Groake won an award in the London Region housing category for Highgate House.

Beautifully constructed with Petersen D36 red brick used as the predominant surface material inside and out, Highgate House reflects the vernacular of this North London suburb.

The loadbearing brick creates a strong physical presence and consistency, with massive abstract elevations, deep window reveals and brick lintels.
